Habitat for Humanity announces "ReHabitat"in Partnership with Hispanic Business Alliance
Habitat for Humanity of Smith County, Inc. announces a new division of its organization, ReHabitat, a home repair program for low-income senior homeowners. In addition to our new home construction program, ReHabitat is a new renovation program where we repair existing damaged homes for the elderly. Texas Health and Human Services Commission, East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG) and Social Services Block Grant have awarded Habitat for Humanity of Smith County a $200,000 grant for critical repair of senior citizens' homes in Smith County. Seniors are defined as age 60 or older with an income of less than 50% of the average mean income in Smith County. The evaluation is based on critical need. It is estimated that nearly half of seniors in Smith County live below the poverty level and could qualify. A preliminary list of over 70 seniors in need has been submitted to Habitat for consideration from 211, a United Way program, and the ETCOG.
Qualifying renovations are based on emergency and critical need such as urgent protection from the elements and potential fire hazards. Repairs include roof leaks, electrical and plumbing issues, as well as energy conservation such as the installation of storm windows and doors. Each repair has monetary limit. However, with the donations of materials and labor combined with any discounted supplies purchased from the Habitat ReStore, one repair could easily be worth well over the limit. For each application, an analysis will be performed to determine the qualifying repairs. The ReHabitat program will employ qualified trade professionals. To oversee and support the construction and trade services, Habitat has partnered with the Tyler Chamber of Commerce Hispanic Business Alliance under the leadership of Price Arredondo. Also in partnership with the Alliance are TEXO, The Construction Association, and UT Tyler Construction Management program. The ReHabitat program will offer many Hispanic and non-Hispanic small business owners, contractors, and subcontractors the opportunity to grow their businesses.
Senior homeowners in need may contact Victor Fuentes, Director of ReHabitat at 903-595-6630 for an application. The deadline for the grant to be spent is August 31, 2010. Habitat estimates making an impact on 75 or more homes by that date.
